Work life balance and pregnancy

Pregnancy is an important phase of your life but you do not have to miss out on your career completely when you choose to go through that phase. The condition varies from individual to individual and most women can balance their pregnancy with their career pretty well.

If your pregnancy does not show yet, you do not have to talk about it because it is not necessary. At work, do not give the impression that you are giving more importance to your pregnancy than your career. Be excited, but don’t always show it at the workplace. With your sincerity, make your employer realize how significant you are and will be in the position in the coming months. You may disclose your pregnancy later when needed. It is totally up to you as you feel comfortable. If you want to share it upfront, that is fine too. Just remember that there is a law against discrimination and do not take being taken lightly because of your pregnancy.

When planning your maternity leave, give them some time so that they can also adapt to it. Assess your situation and be honest with it – This might be your dream job, but it is important to assess your condition as well. Your job is important to you, but the life you carry in your womb bears greater importance.

Here are three action steps to balance between job and pregnancy

1. Sometimes you will have to make a choice, you may love your job but if you think you are not doing justice to it, step back and ask for help.

2. Get an assistant or in worst case, quit temporarily. Balance is the key.

3. Provide your organization a little bit of time before maternity leave, so that they could adapt.
